A Royal Anniversary

It is an anniversary fit for royalty as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip celebrate their 72nd anniversary on November 20th. Royal weddings have been a fan-favorite event for decades. We often get so distracted by tiaras and crowns on the heads of royals that we forget to notice the other jewels they have on, such as their incredible engagement rings. Being part of a royal family means incredible family heirlooms and access to the world’s most premier jewelers, so these engagement rings are to die for. These royal engagement rings have sentimental value, colored stones, simplistic styles, massive carat counts and more.

The Queen has plenty of jewels at her disposal, but there’s one piece of jewelry that she rarely takes off: her three-carat round diamond engagement ring. Though he was born a royal, Philip’s family was not particularly wealthy. When it came time to propose his mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, gave her son a tiara that was originally given to her as a wedding present so he could dismantle it and craft it into a ring.

If you are looking for a royalty-inspired engagement ring for your queen, this classic design by Verragio would be a perfect choice. Made in 18 karat white gold, it features 0.30ct of round brilliant-cut diamonds to enhance a round diamond center. Better start asking your grandmothers for some loose stones off a tiara or two!

When Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton the world could not help but gush over the sapphire and diamond ring that belonged to the late Princess Diana.

You’ll be grinning like a newly engaged princess with your very own diamond and sapphire ring. Created by one of our favorite designers Gregg Ruth, this antique style ring is made with 18karat white gold delicately featuring 0.28cts of diamonds F/G in color VS2 in clarity and 0.79cts of sapphire.

After Prince Andrew proposed to Sarah Ferguson with a ruby, it created a demand for ruby engagement rings across England. It is said that he chose the unique stone to match his future bride’s fiery red hair.

Why not do the same with a favorite red head in your life? This remarkable diamond and ruby eternity band by Christopher Designs will definitely match anyone’s fiery personality – or red hair.

Everyone’s latest royal obsession, Meghan Markle, adores her engagement ring which features a cushion cut diamond, flanked by side diamond’s from Princess Diana’a collection. Prince Harry has said he chose stone’s from his late mother’s collection to “make sure she is with them on this crazy journey.” Awww.

Happiest of anniversaries to our favorite monarch who has shown the world what love can still look like after over seven decades together.

The saying is that “diamonds last forever,” and according to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, true love does too.

Wedding Anniversary Eternity Bands

Wedding ceremonies are a joyous event, bringing family and friends together to celebrate the union of two people in love. However, it is the years that follow this special day – the wedding anniversaries – that really call for celebration.

Eternity bands, aptly named for the one that you will love forever, are always a great choice for an anniversary gift. There are several George Press original designs available to give you plenty of options to choose from.

Was your wedding color pink or green? Either of these sets of bands would be absolutely stunning. Both feature one platinum eternity band set with 6.84cts of shimmering emerald cut diamonds, complimented by either two 18karat yellow gold channel rings, set with 3.74cts of square peridot, or two rose gold channel rings, set with 4.19cts of sapphires. You simply cannot go wrong with either option.

If you are looking for some eternity bands with a little less color but a lot more sparkle, this set of three diamond bands could be ideal. The design is just a touch unexpected, giving it that little bit of mystery that made you fall in love all those years ago.

These eternity bands layer on the love with one platinum band set with 3.94cts of round brilliant diamonds, surrounded by two 18karat yellow gold bands, each set with 3.06cts of both fine white and champagne round diamonds. After all, who doesn’t love champagne on their wedding anniversary? We just happen to love it best in diamond form. As will she.

Another option could be a single eternity band vs a set. By choosing this option you can pick a style that compliments her original wedding band for an updated – and upgraded – look. Fortunately we have several styles of single eternity bands as well.

This vibrant platinum band features 7.85cts of dazzling emerald cut diamonds.

Another emerald cut option is this beautiful band with 6.84cts of diamonds.

If round cut diamonds is more your style, this eternity band is simply breathtaking. A true symbol of your love, this band features 6.21cts of diamonds.

For something more subtle, look no further than this classic eternity band with 0.43cts of diamonds.

As you celebrate your upcoming anniversary, a new eternity band can serve as a beautiful reminder of how your love has no end. These rings, each the shape of a circle, symbolize eternity and how strong ones love can be for another. From all of us at George Press, best wishes for a wonderful anniversary!

Celebrating Your Siblings

April 10th is National Siblings Day. Did you know that in the U.S. approximately 80% of people have siblings? That means that most of you have a reason to celebrate your favorite brother and/or sister next week.

George grew up surrounded by three brothers – and has three girls of his own with wife Cheryl, so he knows first-hand how wonderful it is growing up in a noisy household surrounded by love and playmates.

While some may suggest simply giving your beloved siblings some extra hugs or spending some quality time with them on National Siblings Day, we suggest commemorating this special day with a meaningful gift that they can enjoy all year long.

Some great casual pieces that work well day-to-day could be an ideal choice for you and you beloved siblings. These classic bangles Alor are slightly unexpected with just the right amount of understated. It can dress up an outfit or make every day wear a memorable outfit.

Made with 18karat white gold the design has a trio of cable strands made together to hold a small diamond station. It will look beautiful on the wrist of the siblings you love most. And it comes in a variety of color options such as yellow gold, rose gold or silver to ensure each of your looks are unique to your personalities, but with a matching style.

These blueberry cable bracelets also by Alor are simply delicious. The designer just released a slew of new looks and we could not be more in love with these. And what we love about them the most, is how easily the design can translate into a nod to sibling love.

Each bracelet is made with a stainless steel clasp and 18karat rose gold with the perfect sprinkling of diamonds. Did you grow up in a family with two siblings? Then the bracelet showcasing two diamond clusters is perfect! Three? There is a bracelet showcasing three diamond clusters too. It is almost too perfect to pass up!

And if you happen to be in the market for a more masculine look for a brother, either of these men’s bracelets would be the ideal complement (and isn’t that what brothers are for after all?). Both are expertly made with blue cable and stainless steel.

These gorgeous rings from Marco Bicego could also be a great choice. A part of the designer’s Jaipur collection, they have a special “ready to wear” luxury style that brings to life all the nuance of irregularly shaped natural gems framed by a golden profile. The variety of stone colors can allow you and your siblings to choose styles based on each other’s birth stones, or even each other’s favorite color.

2019 Engagement Ring Trends

It is that time of year once again: the holiday proposals. And we are right smack in the middle of it. Christmas Eve through Valentine’s Day is an incredibly popular time to get engaged. With all of this love in the air it is time to dive right in to the top engagement ring trends for 2019.

Whatever statement you want your brand-new bauble to make, it should definitely say “I love you!” and be a true reflection of your personal style. It may seem overwhelming at first, but we are here to help you find the perfect style that you will love.

Pear shaped diamonds are resurfacing as a popular trend, and for good reason; its faceted cut and feminine curves make it one of the most elegant and flattering shapes for the hand. When paired with delicate diamond halos it can highlight the stone’s shape and intensify its sparkle.

Even within this particular cut there are a variety of styles. One stand-out is this exquisite ring by Steven Kretchmer. The elegant platinum helix style is unique for a pear shaped stone to maximize the brilliance.

engagement rings

A more “traditional” look is this delicate 18karat white gold setting, with a 0.80cts diamond halo.

If you are unsure about using a pear shaped diamond as the center stone, consider placing them on the sides instead. In this sparkler the pear shaped diamonds flank a lovely oval stone for a stunning look. These romantic and round inspired brilliant cut diamonds are close in sparkle and feel to a traditional round diamond. This helps the engagement ring stand out.

engagement rings on trend

Baguette diamonds will be the stone of choice for accents in 2019 engagement rings. Their rectangular shape is what sets them apart from classic diamond cuts, but they still add an element of elegance to the ring.

This amazing ring by Tacori features 0.68cts of baguettes and round diamonds that embellish the princess cut center stone, giving it a uniquely stunning feel.

The Bypass ring is also a style that we will see more of this engagement season. Originally popular in the Victorian era, this style was usually given as an engagement ring because it symbolized two souls coming together as one (aww). Today bypass rings have become popular because they offer a great mix of minimalist and negative spacing that you don’t get with traditional rings.

One of our favorite ring designers Steven Kretchmer, has a few different bypass styles that you can choose from.

Micro pave bands are a great trend that we are loving. Many couples are moving towards having a very thin micro-pave diamond band on their engagement ring and for their wedding band as well. This ultra-thin look highlights the beauty and size of the center stone.

trends for engagement rings

Multi-stone rings are having a real moment. You can use a variety of cuts to create different silhouettes on a standard band. And stacking three – or even five! – stones side by side gives an engagement ring some serious stature.

Check out this five stone ring featuring 1.26cts of emerald cut diamonds, D in color, VS1 in clarity, framed with four trapezoid diamonds in the mounting. Simply breathtaking.

what are the trends for engagement ring

Whether you are seriously shopping, secretly adding rings to your Pinterest board, or dropping hints to your partner, there is never a wrong time to look at engagement rings, and 2019 is already shaping up to be a fun one with dreamy designs that will want you to day “I do.”

We have had the honor and pleasure of being a part of thousands of happy engagements. Please stop in and see us soon. We would love to help you start off 2019 with a happy engagement of your very own.

2019 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Red carpet gowns are always known to make bold fashion statements. Following last year’s black tones in support of the Time’s Up movement, Sunday’s dresses turned back to technicolor and brought an extra level of fun to the most boisterous ceremony of the awards season. We saw colors from all across the rainbow, complimented with incredible jewelry that we could not help but gaze at.

Lady Gaga who has worn dresses made of raw meat in the past, chose a more elegant option this year complete with matching blue hair and an incredible diamond necklace.

A handful of others such as Elizabeth Moss, Taraji P. Henson, and Isla Fisher, also added some sparkle to their necklines to bring an extra level of glamour to their red carpet looks.

Do you tend to favor the look of old Hollywood? If so, this alluring antique style diamond necklace will make you feel like Audrey Hepburn in no time. Made with 18karat white gold, this “oldie but goodie” features 1.24cts of round brilliant diamonds.

Another style with an even higher sparkle factor is this diamond Riviera necklace. Forget about those pesky camera flashes from the paparazzi, because this beauty will light up any room all on its own! With 18karat white gold and 23.33cts of diamonds, this necklace will make you will feel like a celebrity.

Perhaps your personal star power prefers a breathtaking necklace with a more geometric feel to it. Our friends at Gregg Ruth have beautifully combined symmetry and elegance to create an exquisite necklace that can rival any red carpet look. This incredible work of art is from the Asher Cut collection, featuring 6.60cts of sparkling diamonds.

Sandra Oh had quite an exciting night as both a host and an award winner. During the broadcast she donned several beautiful looks. However we were particularly taken with her gorgeous ensemble on the red carpet. Her beautifully upswept hair gave her gown a more romantic look, and allowed us to take a peek at those lovely earrings she wore before the celebrations began.

A similar pair of Tiffany earrings by Schlumberger will give you a grin as big as Sandra Oh’s – without having to change your gown countless times! This timeless piece is made from 18karat gold. Schlumberger’s designs were coveted and collected by the world’s most fashionable women, including Jacqueline Kennedy and legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland. Today, they continue to be worn by women of unimpeachable taste.

Michelle Yeoh was the talk of the red carpet when she flashed a very special piece of jewelry that she wore in Crazy Rich Asians: the enormous emerald ring. And this lucky starlet did not borrow the bauble from the film’s wardrobe department – it is actually hers in real life! Lucky girl.

But Ms. Yeoh shouldn’t be the only one with an impressive emerald ring in her jewelry box. Henry Dunay created this amazing ring with a standout design. It features 3.60cts of diamonds and vivid emerald and sapphire cabochons that will turn heads and get people talking. Do not be surprised if a big movie’s wardrobe department soon calls you for styling tips!

Kristin Cavallari was one of the pre-show red carpet commentators, so you know her fashion game had to be top notch on Sunday, and it definitely was.

The designer and former reality star looked incredible in her detailed dress. Our favorite part was of course her pink drop earrings. If you love them as much as we do, check out these beauties made by Doves.

This exquisite pair of rose gold drop earrings feature rose quartz and 0.64cts of black and white diamonds. With these framing your gorgeous face, you too will be on top of your fashion game. Flesh colored dress not required.

Last year’s Golden Globes red carpet made a bold political statement with the black dress initiative. This year had a tough act to follow, no matter how much tulle, spanx and hairspray our favorite stars had at their disposal. Nevertheless, the 2019 red carpet was full of looks that did not disappoint with a variety of colors and accessories for all of us to enjoy. With such an explosion of color and sparkle, it was quite the kick off to awards season. Is it time for the next red carpet event yet?!

A statement piece is always a fashionable accompaniment to any night look.

Fashion’s Playground at the Teen Choice Awards

The grown-ups may have the Oscars and Golden Globes, but celebrities of all ages take fashion very seriously, with this year’s Teen Choice Awards being no exception. The red carpet may not have been full of ball gowns and tuxedos, but the who’s who of the young Hollywood starlets did not disappoint.

The night was full of eye-catching looks from sparkling shorts to glamorous glittering jumpsuits. Without a doubt, it was a night full of color and these bold outfit choices also included some jewelry looks that we could not get enough of.

Meghan Trainor accessorized her stunning midnight blue two-piece with simpler accessories to keep her look balanced. The next time you step out in a dramatic ensemble, make sure you follow Meghan’s lead and keep your jewelry simple for a polished look.

Two great options for earrings – especially if you decide to wear your hair up – are these two pairs, both by Doves. The white tones will really pop if worn with a darker and/or bolder color.

Both of these beauties are made with 18karat yellow gold, featuring mother of pearl and exquisite diamonds. You cannot go wrong with either option.

Another dramatic yet simple accessory for a bolder look is this amazing fashion ring by one of our favorite designers, Alor. Meghan kept her look balanced with one ring on each hand. If are looking for something special for your right hand (or left!), this lady’s Alor white gold ring is simple, yet eye catching. It is made with a white stainless steel and 18karat white gold cable from Alor’s Classique collection, featuring 0.08cts of round diamonds.

One of today’s hottest singers, Bebe Rexha also choice a colorful two piece outfit with accessories more on the sparkly side (which we love).

With her accessories, Bebe really embraced the layered look. And while the color of her ensemble is bold, she kept it monotone which helped her jewelry stand out.

If you tend to favor the layered look as well, this necklace by Honora could be a great option. It is made with 5.5-6MM potato white freshwater cultured pearl and onyx, set in sterling silver. The classic color combination makes it ideal with any outfit, and at 60” in length you can really play with how to wear it, giving you endless options.

For a similar look, but with less layers, Honora has two other pearl necklaces at a shorter, 36” length. Both are made with sterling silver and feature 9-10MM baroque freshwater cultured pearls.

Storm Reid, an up and coming actress, kept her look a little more on the casual side. We couldn’t help but notice her bracelet, which reminded us of another of Alor’s classic pieces, the cable cuff bracelet.

This year’s Teen Choice Awards was a night filled with fashion fun. Our favorite young stars gave us some really great looks from head to painted toes. Whether it be on the big screen or the silver screen, we cannot see what these starlets have in store for us next.

Must-Have Jewelry Trends that Revive your Favorite Looks

As we (finally!) start to move towards spring trends and embrace a new season, it is time to give our accessories a little spring cleaning and revive some classic looks to make them more distinct and personal. These range from pendant necklaces to layer, gold hoops of all sizes and statement rings that cannot be missed.

Eye-catching pendants are always an unexpected way to add some flair to an outfit, and you can get way more mileage out of your jewelry collection if you know how to layer your pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix and match, or worry about spacing your necklaces out evenly. In fact, some necklaces with pendants will help your chains stay untangled.

To break up a solid colored top, wear necklaces in the same metal. Two beautiful options would be these sapphire and diamond necklaces by Gregg Ruth.

The top pendant is made with 18 karat while gold featuring 0.23cts of diamonds and 1.54cts of sapphires. The equally gorgeous one below is also made in 18 karat white gold with 0.34cts of diamonds and 2.43cts of rich blue sapphires. By pairing these two stunners together, imagine the extra sparkle it would bring to your favorite understated top!

1 2If you plan on wearing a brighter blouse, go for a pendant that is a little more subtle in color – but is still attention grabbing. Gregg Ruth has some amazing options to choose from. This incredible spiral diamond pendant features 1.96cts of dazzling diamonds and would catch anyone (and everyone’s) eye.

Another possibility with a similar refined look, but in a different shape (and definitely not lacking in sparkle!), is this diamond pendant from the Gregg Ruth Asher Collection. This incredible necklace features 0.73cts of diamonds.

Also, don’t be afraid to mix masculine with more feminine pieces. A chunky chain can make your more delicate accessories pop even more. And what could be more delicate than some adorable baby footprints? Or maybe a pawprint?

6 Both necklaces, designed by Monica Rich Kosann, come on a 30” diamond-cut chain and feature white sapphires.

How many gold hoops do you think you have packed away in your jewelry box? One….two…ten?!  No matter how many or few you may have, this is the season to bring them out of hiding and make a statement. If you are looking to add some new ones to your collection, Alor has some great choices to fit any style or budget.

This classic pair is made with 18 karat yellow gold and puts a small twist on the classic gold hoop.

Or for a look that is a little bolder, this pair of hoops features 0.10cts of diamonds.

If you are loving the layered look, you don’t have to stop at your necklaces. By wearing these little numbers you will immediately add a whole new level to your style with one pair of earrings – and some subtle sparkle as well with 0.16cts of diamonds.

A few weeks ago we looked into the history, legends and lore of cocktail rings. Well, this season it is time to up the ante a little more with statement rings meant to stack. Go ahead and throw a hand party and invite all of your favorite rings of different shapes and sizes. Just be sure to keep the rest of your look simple so your hands can really steal the spotlight (and don’t forget about that manicure!). If your ring guest list is looking a little lean, we have some great choices to bring some new life to the party.

This Masai yellow and white gold five strand ring has a stackable look all its own. It is made with five strands of interwoven 18 karat white and yellow gold and gives you the look of multiple rings all in one!

10 If you are yearning for something a little “extra,” this beauty by Marco Bicego could be just what you had in mind. This unique Goa ring is made with seven rows of 18 karat yellow gold, and 0.41cts of diamonds.

If you want something a little more unexpected and with a little more edge, this white gold ring by Alor strikes the perfect balance. A part of the Classique collection, this stainless steel fashion ring is made with 18 karate white gold cable, featuring 0.08cts of round diamonds.

Everyone has their favorite go-to pieces, despite how many you may have in your drawer or jewelry box. While always reaching for your tried and true pieces makes things easier, hopefully these tips on reviving those classic looks – with maybe some new pieces thrown in – will give all your must have jewelry a fresher look.

February’s Birthstone Amethyst is a Royal Favorite

If the month of February has you wishing for warmer days, this month’s birthstone which is often associated with qualities of peace, courage and stability, is just the right gem for those needing a little extra warmth and strength this time of year. February’s Birthstone amethyst beauty will help make this month fly by in no time!

Amethyst is purple quartz, made from a beautiful blend of violet and red. Once considered more valuable than diamonds, amethyst can be found in every corner of the earth. The ancient Greeks believed that this gemstone held many powers, among them protection against intoxication.  In fact, the word Amethyst comes from the Greek word “amethystos,” meaning sober.

For many years, amethyst was held to be one of the most precious gemstones often favored by royalty who wore this intense violet hue. Amethyst has been found in ruins dating as far back as the ninth century, adorning crowns, scepters, jewelry, and breastplates worn into battle. Even today, a large amethyst is among the closely guarded gemstones in the British Crown Jewels.

It may not be a crown, but these spectacular earrings by Shoshana will definitely make you feel like royalty. Bold and elegant, these cannot-be-missed 14 karat yellow gold earrings feature vibrant rubies, pink sapphires, diamonds and of course amethysts.

Another famous royal who favored amethyst was Cleopatra. In fact, it is said that the signet ring she wore was an amethyst. You can feel like a Greek goddess as well with a stunning amethyst ring of your very own.

On the day you step out with this stunner on your finger, heads will definitely turn in your direction. Made by Bulgari, this ring is made with 8 karat yellow gold with a beautiful amethyst stone in a unique setting.

Another breathtaking option is this ring by Doves. Beautiful amethyst is coupled with pink mother of pearl creating an original and alluring shade of purple, surrounded by 0.34cts of diamonds.

Do you feel like a modern day Cleopatra yet?

If you are still on the hunt for that perfect Valentine’s Day gift, amethyst can be an unexpected yet very appropriate choice. Amethyst is said to be the stone of Saint Valentine, who wore an amethyst engraved with the figure of his assistant, Cupid.

Your favorite valentine will look at you with love in her eyes when she sees these Murano multi-stone earrings by Marco Bicego. Each pair is hand engraved with 18 karat yellow gold to beautifully showcase rhodolite garnet and amethyst gems.

And did we mention there is a matching ring as well?

And speaking of the power of love, if you are celebrating an anniversary this month amethyst is an ideal gem to choose. It is believed that the gift of amethyst strengthens the bond in a love relationship.

Nothing will say “I love you” while giving your anniversary some extra sparkle more elegantly than this multi-stone and diamond bracelet by Shoshana. You can make it an anniversary to remember with this 18 karat while gold bracelet made with pink amethyst, green amethyst, citrine and blue topaz, framed by 1.17cts of round diamonds.

The legends and lore associated with this month’s birthstone are as deep as the color itself. However, whether or not amethyst holds such power, it’s stunning beauty will certainly make anyone celebrating something special this month – or anyone who just loves beautiful jewelry – feel like royalty!

Your love for her will shine through with either option. You cannot go wrong.

For something with a little more sparkle, the Shoshana rose gold and diamond heart pendant will capture her love – and take her breath away. This dazzler is made with 18 karat white and rose gold, set with 0.78cts of fine white and fancy pink round diamonds.

If she would like something a little more playful, you can pull right on her heart strings with a Shoshana Hearts within Heart pendant. This delightful design comes in 18 karat white gold with a colorful array of 1.18cts of pink, yellow and blue round sapphires.

For your more understated Valentine, this sterling silver locket by Monica Rich Kosann could be a great option. Imagine the smile that will spread across her face every time she looks down and sees a special photo beautifully displayed in this necklace, right next to her heart.

The chocolates you plan to give her will taste even sweeter as she admires this elegant sapphire and diamond bypass ring by Shoshana – she won’t even mind if she picks her least favorite filling! The two heart shaped sapphires, set with 0.61cts of diamonds will make her heart (and taste buds) do a happy dance.

All of those sweet nothings you plan on whispering into her ear over the candlelight dinner you have planned will sound extra poetic when these ruby and diamond earrings frame her beautiful face. Featuring heart shaped rubies, these little numbers are made with 18 karat yellow gold, framed by 0.92cts of baguette diamonds.

What about the littlest Valentines in your life? We have some sweet ideas for them, too.

Imagine their face light up when they first see this custom George Press signature heart necklace that you picked out just for them. Made with 14 karat white gold, and set with 0.14cts of diamonds, you will make your little darling feel like the most special girl in the world (and bonus points if you get Mommy a grown-up heart shaped necklace too).

Another adorable and classic choice is an ID bracelet. Each bracelet is made with 14 karat yellow gold with a pink enamel heart, and can be engraved with a message of your choice as unique as your little Valentine. Every time she looks down at it, whether at school or during one of her activities, she will think of you and always remember how much she is loved.

We wish you and your loved ones non-stop love this Valentine’s Day. We hope it is a day filled with smiles and chocolate. No matter how you plan on celebrating, as the wise Katherine Hepburn once said remember that “love has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get – only with what you are expecting to give – which is everything.”

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Bringing the Party with Cocktail Rings

Have you ever wondered how cocktail rings got their name? During Prohibition, a celebratory cocktail was about as big a status symbol as anything you could wear. It was vital that everyone noticed your illicit beverage, so women took to wearing bigger-than-life rings to complement their cocktail of choice. With such an impressive history and can’t-be-missed allure, colorful cocktail rings are the perfect accessory for any occasion you have on your agenda.

Traditionally a cocktail ring is larger and chunkier than most rings, with a very big center stone and bold, edgy vibe. Oftentimes, these rings are seen as an expression of individual style but it can be tricky with so many options out there.

If you have long, slender fingers, any kind of cocktail ring would work well. You lucky gal! Get the (cocktail) party started with this incredible rose gold lapis ring by Doves. This stunner is made with 18karat rose gold with a lapis base white mother of pearl middle, and light amethyst on top. Surrounded by diamonds it is checkerboard cut and from the Viola collection.

Another fun choice by Doves would be this 18karat white turquoise and diamond fashion ring. The design features one cushion white topaz over a turquoise gem, both encircle with round white diamonds.

You can also wear cocktail rings with wider bands, as these tend to accentuate the length of your fingers. Add some serious shine to your outfits with either of these Shoshana diamond rings.

Our multicolored ring will match any cocktail (or dress) of choice with 5.81cts of sparkling, multicolor and multishaped diamonds.

For something a little more understated (but still stunning), this 18 karat yellow gold flower ring features 1.17cts of various shaped diamonds.

If your fingers are more on the shorter side, you should pick cocktail rings with smaller stones and thin to medium-sized bands. If you prefer a ring with a center stone, choose ones with stones in these cuts — marquise, oval, and pear.

Any of the rings from our Jaipur Collection would work beautifully. Each are made with 18K yellow gold and come in a variety of colors such as light or deep purple amethyst, blue topaz or red garnet.

For something a little bolder, you may want to try this elegant 18karat yellow gold ring by Marco Bicego with a dark aquamarine center stone.

To make wider fingers look more slender, opt for cocktail ring with large center stones. Our Shoshana line once again has some great choices for you depending on your mood or event.

This multistone ring features garnets and green quartz accented by diamonds.

Or if you are feeling a little spicy there is this 18karat white gold beauty. It is set with a Mexican Fire Opal center stone surrounded by 1.41cts of fine white and black round diamonds.

If your outfit needs even more bite, make a bold statement with this 18karat white gold smoky quartz and garnet ring with 1.92cts of accent diamonds.

Cocktail rings with smaller center stones or those with no center stone at all are perfect for the ladies with thin fingers. Wearing rings with huge center stones give the illusion of making fingers look slimmer, so this is the type you shouldn’t wear. As for the width of the ring, choose bands that are not too thin and are not too wide.

This unexpected piece will add some excitement to whatever you are wearing. Our Shoshana moonstone and diamond right is made with 18karat rose gold and 5.10cts of moonstone with 0.58cts of round diamonds.

If this ring doesn’t strike your fancy, another from the Shoshana collection just might. This little lady features a stunning 1.00ct champagne diamond and 1.01cts of fine diamonds. What could possibly look better on your hand as you enjoy a flute of cold champagne?

Regardless of what type of fingers you may have, a universal “rule” for cocktail rings is that the ring chosen should not extend past the bottom of the knuckle to avoid overwhelming the hand. And speaking of hands, it is important to remember that a cocktail ring draws attention to the wearer’s hand. So, use it as an excuse to treat yourself to a manicure (as if you needed one). Happy cocktailing!

A New Year, A New You, A New Engagement

The start of a new year is always a magical time. Once the clock strikes midnight on December 31st and a new year is ushered in, the air is buzzing with new hopes, dreams and exciting aspirations (thanks to that extra cocktail or two…). For the love birds out there, it can also mean the start of a new chapter: an engagement!

According to Brides Magazine, “engagement season” tends to run from November through February. If you are waiting for the moment to say “YES!” – or are busy planning the perfect way to ask – if 2018 is your engagement year, now’s the time to check out the up and coming trends.

Oval shaped diamonds are becoming a popular alternative to both round and emerald shapes. The elongated shape lends itself to a vintage vibe and can vary from stone to stone to give you a ring truly all your own.

Some options would be an oval center stone surrounded by either pear shaped or round diamonds for some extra sparkle.

While the oval cut is a trend on the more classic side, pear-cut rings are totally modern and fashion-forward for 2018. This option is perfect for the trendsetting bride who wants a standout ring to match her everyday style.

An exciting and unexpected choice could be this diamond engagement helix ring by Steven Kretchmer. This style is unique for a pear shaped stone to maximize its brilliance.

As brides continue to embrace brighter hues for their wedding colors, the same is true for engagements rings too. With so many colored gemstones to choose from, the sky is the limit!

This ruby and diamond ballerina ring will make your fiancé spin with love and delight. Featuring a 2.62ct round Burmese Ruby, this stunner is framed by 3.10cts of baguette diamonds.

If your love runs as deep as the ocean, how about this Shoshana sapphire and diamond bypass ring. This unique setting is made with 18 karat white gold featuring two (how perfect for an engagement ring?) heart shaped sapphires set with 0.61cts of diamonds.

Instead of a single stone, more brides are opting for blinged-out bands. They offer just as much sparkle as a big center stone, but are more suitable for those who aren’t comfortable with the height of a solitaire.

You’ll be basking in layers of love with this set of three diamond eternity bands. The set features one platinum eternity band set with 3.94cts of round brilliant diamonds surrounded by two 18 karat yellow bands each set with 3.06cts of both fine white and champagne round diamonds, all designed by George Press.

Whether you select a ring that is “on-trend” or decide to create an original piece, for over 35 years George Press has helped thousands of couples say “Will you marry me?” We understand the importance of finding that one-of-a-kind piece for a day you will remember forever. An exceptional moment deserves an exceptional ring.

Come in and visit George Press today for all of your engagement and wedding band needs. We can help you find that special piece for that special someone. And let us be the first to wish you a happy engagement in the New Year!

Heirlooms: Pieces of Jewelry that Stand the Test of Time

What makes a pieces of jewelry heirlooms? Value, quality and beauty are all important factors to be considered. However, for most, it is the stories behind the pieces. Sometimes they are stories of love, dreams, accomplishments, and perhaps even loss. If you already have a family heirloom, there is no doubt that you treasure it. The piece is most likely associated with fond memories of the person who owned it before you, and you have probably already thought about who in your family you will one day pass it on to.

1(Image source)

An example of a famous heirloom is the engagement ring that Prince William used to propose to Kate Middleton. The diamond and sapphire ring was previously worn by William’s late mother, Princess Diana in 1981.

If you don’t have a family heirloom, there is no reason that you cannot create one. Jewelry makes the perfect choice and if chosen wisely, a quality piece of jewelry can be worn, enjoyed and cherished forever. One tip is to select a piece that is more timeless vs trendy so it can be worn across generations. Some good choices include diamonds, gold or platinum rings, pearls or charms.

If you are inspired by royal style, one option is this Gregg Ruth diamond and sapphire antique cluster ring. Made with 18 karat white gold, this sparkler features 0.28cts of diamonds and 0.79cts of sapphire.

There is something very classic and timeless about pearls. Imagine your daughter or granddaughter – and then her daughter or granddaughter – getting her diploma or walking down the aisle in these incredible mother of pearl earrings by Doves. Surrounded by 0.21cts of diamonds with 18 karats of yellow gold, these simple treasures can forever be a part of countless memories.

A necklace is also a stunning choice for an heirloom. This one by Doves is made with 18 karat white gold featuring a deep rich green agate and almost 0.50cts of sparkling diamonds. An eye-catching piece like this would definitely spark some conversation, to be the part of great stories to tell over and over again.

Another option is to create a custom piece, or even use jewelry that you already own to create multiple heirlooms for your family. Many of our customers prefer to custom design their jewelry, therefore truly creating one-of-a-kind pieces. We love bringing your visions to life.

You can create an entirely new piece, or restyle an heirloom that has become out-of-date. Regardless of what you choose to do, our jewelers will make the process an enjoyable experience you will never forget. All of our custom work is done right in our Livingston store.

The process of creating your custom piece of jewelry is as exciting as the beautiful finished product. We work closely with you to put your ideas and inspiration to paper or computer, then our skilled jewelers can either hand carve a wax model or create a computerized model with CAD technology. Following your approval, one of our highly trained goldsmiths will cast the piece and spend many days hand setting the gems and perfecting the finish.

Every step is more exciting than the last, and each piece is a labor of love. The time and care given to our custom process is reflected in every finished piece for several generations to enjoy.

An heirloom is a classic and beautiful way to create long lasting traditions, or honor the memories of generations past. We look forward to helping you create pieces unique to your family, or to select something new. Regardless of which decision you make, either will serve as a wonderful way to link the past to both the present and the future.

If you are looking for something more classic, a Swiss Army watch is always a trusted choice. We have a wide variety of styles for both men and women that can take you to the boardroom, the ballroom, or the golf course. All Swiss Army watches purchased at George Press are eligible for the manufacturer’s three-year limited warranty, which covers defects to the hands, dial and movement.

Water resistant up to 100 feet, this timepiece is finished with 0.61 carats of diamonds and 0.07 carats of pink sapphires.

And speaking of bright ideas, colored gems are always a good gift choice. Whether it’s a birthstone or simply a signature hue, colored jewelry always makes a statement, firing up any wardrobe. According to Forbes, vibrant colored jewels have also been rock stars at auction lately, meaning today’s glittering gift could be tomorrow’s brilliant investment.

A few possibilities to consider are the Doves pieces from their London Blue collection. The bracelet is an 18K gold white gold bangle with a triangle of diamonds facing the topaz, while the earrings feature topazes surrounded by white diamonds. Whether you’re looking for a bracelet or earrings, these pieces feature a topaz stone that’s as “blue as the Union Jack” and is sure to delight the lucky recipient.

Enjoy a Feel Good December with Three Beautiful Blue Jewels

If you are looking for a way to fight off the winter blues, the December birthstones have you covered: tanzanite, zircon and turquoise – all of which are best known for beautiful shades of blue. These gems range from the oldest on earth (zircon), to one of the first mined and used in jewelry (turquoise), to one of the most recently discovered (tanzanite). While turquoise is the most common birthstone for December, no matter what gem you pick the generally accepted birthstone color for this month is light blue. Let’s imagine the possibilities, shall we?

Admired since ancient times, turquoise is known for its distinct color, which ranges from powdery blue to greenish robin’s egg blue. It is one of the few gems that is named for its striking color, and is considered to be a symbol of good fortune and success, bringing prosperity to its wearer. No wonder it has remained so popular throughout time!

If you are celebrating a birthday this month, you should treat yourself to your very own piece of good fortune with these turquoise and diamond earrings by Doves. These 18 karat white gold beauties will brighten your day with brilliant turquoise stones and over 0.50cts of diamonds.

Speaking of brightness, a more unknown turquoise history fact is that the brightness of the color is supposed to be the symbol for happiness, and is believed to increase a person’s self-confidence. No one will be able to resist smiling when they see you wearing this adorable poodle brooch. The perfect birthday or holiday gift for any dog lover, this 18 karat gold piece has cabochon turquoise and ruby details that would make anyone feel good.

Or you can add a splash of color to your (or someone else’s) day with this stunning turquoise and sapphire ring by Shoshana. Either choice is a feel-good one.

However, if you decide to break away from the “traditional” turquoise stone, and celebrate December with the color light blue, Belle Toile has created an incredible set as part of their Destiny Collection.

Belle Étoile_Destiny_Blue_Earrings_03-01-13-1-03-03

Belle Étoile_Destiny_Blue_Ring_01-01-13-1-03-03

Cascades of brilliant blue shine throughout each of these three pieces. You can express your confidence (a nod to what turquoise symbolizes) with a trio of rich, exquisite stones set in a flowing style. The Destiny pendant, necklace and ring each feature sparkling and radiant blue and green stones set into rhodium-plated, nickel allergy-free, 925 sterling silver.

Another light blue choice is this blue leather and pearl bracelet by Honora, made with sterling silver featuring a delicate yet eye-catching blue stone section.

Regardless of whether you decide to keep with traditional turquoise or go outside the box and explore a different light blue gem, the December birthstone provides you with many options to match your true blue desires, in any style you choose.

Keep on smiling December babies!

Topaz & Citrine: Two Ways to Celebrate November

It may be getting chilly outside, but those celebrating birthdays in November will feel sunny and bright thanks to topaz and citrine, this month’s birthstones. While both of these stones can look similar – and have been mistaken for one another – they are each unique in their own special way (perhaps you know of some November-born twins that can relate…?).

Topaz has an exceptionally wide color range that includes brown, and various tones and saturations of blue, green, yellow, orange, red, pink, and purple. The orange topaz, also known as Precious Topaz, is the traditional November birthstone. Regardless of whether you are drawn to the warm or cool tones, topaz is a lustrous and brilliant gem. With so many color options to choose from, why limit yourself on your birthday?

Perhaps you would like an original piece by us to celebrate. This George Press Topaz and Diamond ring features a topaz stone, framed by 0.58cts of both fine white and black round brilliant diamonds.

Another gorgeous option is a White Gold London Blue Diamond ring by Doves. This piece showcases 18K white gold with a London blue topaz gem, outlined in diamonds.

No matter which topaz ring you choose, either will look stunning on your hand as you sip some birthday champagne.

November’s other birthstone, citrine, is a variety of quartz ranging in colors of yellow, yellow-brown, orange, dark orange-brown, reddish-brown. Its name comes from the Greek word “citron,” because of its similar color to citrus fruit.

This beautiful necklace by Marco Bicego will look delicious around your neck paired with these Murano Citrine earrings. Both by the same renowned designer, the necklace and earrings are made with 18 karat yellow gold showcasing a dazzling citrine stone.

CB1801-QG01-300x300 OB1135-QG01-Y-web-300x300

In ancient cultures citrine was called the “stone of the mind.” Healers believed it had the power to promote clarity of thought, open your mind and increase someone’s psychic power. With that kind of reputation perhaps you should pick up a pair of these cufflinks by Alor for your husband to wear the next time he picks his lotto numbers – bonus points if he is celebrating a November birthday!

Both pairs of these lucky cufflinks are made with 20mm stainless steel cable surrounding a citrine stone.

Regardless of whether you choose topaz or citrine to celebrate November, both stones are fairly abundant and affordably priced, even in large sizes, which means everyone can find a way to fit topaz and citrine into their budget.

Dress for Success – with Sapphires!

Right below diamonds, the most precious gemstones are the “Big 3” – emeralds, rubies and sapphires. Of course there are other rarities that qualify for this list, but those 3 are the ones most widely known to be precious, and most frequently displayed in Crown Jewels and other prestigious collections of valuable jewels.

If gems had personalities, the big 3 would probably be something like this: Rubies would be fiery and passionate, perhaps a little narcissistic (deservedly so) and not inclined to worry about the little things. Emeralds would be exotic and eclectic, interested in adventure and the arts, a bit sulky on occasion and unapologetic about it. Sapphires, on the other hand, would be smart and sophisticated, perennially neat and tidy, well-dressed at all times, confident and just a bit aloof. Perfect in all ways for those who are looking to dress for success.

Good news for those born in September – sapphires, a variety of the mineral corundum, are readily available in a wide range of colors, from white – often used as a substitute for diamonds – to orange, yellow, green and even black. If they are red they are rubies! The rarest and most expensive color is the pink-orange padparadscha which comes from Sri Lanka. Different colored sapphires can be tailored to different moods, for example, look at these pink ones.

Pretty in Pink

Valentine's Day, Pink Sapphire, Earrings, Flower Earrings

As fresh as a spring morning, these Pink Sapphire and Freshwater Pearl Earrings brim with cheerful spirits. Perfect for day through evening, and featuring 0.70 cts of beautiful pink sapphires, they will reflect the sunny side of your personality.

A Tisket, A Tasket

Talk about neat and tidy, just look at the gorgeous wavy 18 karat white gold setting of this Diamond and Sapphire Ring from Gregg Ruth’s Espris Collection.  Reminiscent of a basket, it blooms with 0.88cts of round diamonds encasing bright blue sapphires. This ring projects a passion for orderliness and enjoyment of beautiful design.

Corundum Compass

North, east, south and west, 1.54cts of brilliant blue sapphires point the way to all four corners of the globe in this Gregg Ruth Sapphire and Diamond Necklace. Set in 18 karat white gold with 0.23cts of diamonds, with this sophisticated charmer, you will have the determination and perseverance to find your way to success.

Wearing the right jewelry can give you a real advantage. For modern women, sapphire is a perfect choice to project the best image. Borrow the look from September and let sapphires work for you all year long!

Emeralds – May’s Spring Green Birthstone

Spring is here and all around us vivid colors are replacing the browns and greys of winter. It’s safe to say that the most predominant color is bright, bold green. So, what better birthstone for this time than the magnificent, precious emerald!

emerald birthstone

Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl. It presents in all different shades of green with the deeper shades being more valuable. If the color is too light, it may be classified as a green beryl. The green color is caused by trace amounts of chromium or vanadium.

Clarity is the second most important feature of emeralds, with a high degree of transparency being more desirable, because emeralds tend to have inclusions and fissures. These imperfections are sometimes referred to as “Jardin,” “garden” in French because they resemble garden moss. Emerald is one of four precious gemstones, the others being diamonds, sapphires and rubies.

Columbia is the largest producer of emeralds, and a rare type of emerald with dark spokes caused by inclusions, called “trapiche,” is also found there. The second largest producer is Zambia. Lesser quantities of emeralds have also been found in many other countries, including the United States, where they have been discovered in Connecticut, the Carolinas, Nevada and Montana.

Emeralds were mined in ancient Egypt, and Cleopatra was a particular fan of the gemstone, laying claim to all the emerald mines in her country. Spanish conquistadors also coveted the stones, bringing many back from South America.  Emeralds are said to be a symbol of new beginnings, loyalty and peace. The ancient Romans dedicated emeralds to Venus, known as the goddess of love and beauty.

Elizabeth Taylor had a famous set of emeralds and diamonds, a gift from her husband, Richard Burton, which has been valued at about 100 million dollars. Angelina Jolie favors them also, and has 115-carat double drop emerald earrings and a 65-carat emerald ring.

Various royals also have famous emerald pieces, including a German emerald and diamond tiara, an Indian necklace, and a Belgian necklace.  Several pieces in the British Crown Jewels also are emerald-centered, including the Grand Duchess Vladimir Emerald Tiara, named for the aunt of Tsar Nicolas II and subsequently acquired by Queen Mary in 1921. Queen Mary was also given the Delhi Durbar Emerald Necklace, a gift from the Maharaja of Patiala, India.

Obviously, emeralds were, and are, prized by many important people throughout history. Their brilliant green color is captivating. Spring is also lovely, with its bright green grass and leaves. But you can’t wear lawn clippings! So, bring a bit of emerald green into your life that you can wear all year round, and have a little piece of spring to calm your soul.

The Joys of Custom Jewelry

George Press loves to create. Whether he finds inspiration in a particular gem or a design that no one else makes, he has the talent to produce gorgeous pieces of custom-designed fine jewelry that aren’t available anywhere else. A graduate of the Pratt Institute, he has won the Best of Essex Award of Best Custom Jeweler numerous times. George has the skills and ability to bring his dreams to reality. Aren’t we lucky to have such wonderful talent available to us!

Tropical Treasure

Let’s take a look at some of George’s recent pieces and see if we can guess what the inspiration was behind them.  One of our favorites is this George Press South Sea Pearl and Diamond Ring.

George Press South Sea Pearl and Diamond Ring

The inspiration here is obvious, it has to be that glowing golden orb of a south sea pearl.  It’s unblemished sheen reflected by the 18 karat yellow gold envelope that has taken the place of its mother shell.  The finish to this fantasy?  A sprinkling of diamonds frosting the edges. Can you think of a more perfect setting for this gift from the sea?

Heavenly Necklace

Here’s another piece to consider.  In this case, it would appear that the setting design is the inspiration.  Part celestial body, like a sun or a star, and part compass, it sets the course for a journey to the depths of your imagination.  Hand-crafted in precious platinum with 2.83cts of sparkling diamonds, imagine how this looks against a woman’s velvety skin.  The different diamond cuts add intrigue and flair.  This is not a necklace you can get in any jewelry store, it’s only the best, from George Press.

All Things Classical

Whimsical yet serious, this ring is a musical masterpiece of design and fine arts materials. Looking at it, one would think that George was inspired by a fine piece of classical music, like Chopin’s Spring Waltz or Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. The classical scrolls of the setting bring to mind the artistry of carved moldings from great estates, and the gentle, generous curves are Rubenesque in nature.  Above all that, sitting like a queen on a throne is a beautifully cut topaz framed in black diamonds and accented by white ones.

This was fun, but as you know, we are only guessing as to what goes on in the mind of George Press.  If you really want to know, you’ll have to come in and ask!  While you’re here, take a look at our selection of custom jewelry and see if one of the pieces speaks to you.  Or talk to George about designing your own bespoke piece, then he can tell everyone how you inspired him!

Stargazing – The 2017 Golden Globe Awards

Take a golden globe, wrap it in a filmstrip, put it on a marble base, and you’ve got the quintessential element for a night of Hollywood stargazing and fashion trend-spotting!

The Golden Globe awards took place on Sunday, January 8, with all the aplomb, speculation and downright gossip these events can muster. Beautiful actresses, handsome leading men, gorgeous gowns, and of course, the best jewelry that money can buy (or that can be loaned gratis to important celebrities!)

This year was no exception. If you ask us, the jewelry outshone the gowns, if not the lovely ladies. Even a casual observer would have noticed several trends either emerging or being confirmed.

Leave the Cuffs on!

One of the more obvious stylings was the presence of big, bold cuffs.  Kristen Wiig wore a polished gold Chanel cuff and Ruth Negga also chose a gold cuff with a large ruby. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ cuff was slathered in diamonds.  But the award goes to Blake Lively and her matching emerald and diamond-bedecked cuffs that added a superhero touch to her black and metallic gown.

Thinking about trying this twice-as-nice trend?  Let us suggest a pair of these Alor Petra Diamond and Brown Stingray Cuffs. 18 karat gold and stainless steel cuffs with brown stingray and colored and white diamonds are sleek and sophisticated, especially when paired.  Imagine these with a beautiful cashmere sweater, or enhancing your slender wrists in a sleeveless dress. Tap them together and let the magic happen!

Stingray Alor Brown

Rings on Her Fingers…

Tracee Ellis Ross of “Blackish” fame fluttered her fingers for the camera all night to flaunt her diamond-laden hands.  Twelve rings, ten fingers, she took it to the extreme!  But she was far from the only celebrity wearing multiple rings, mostly of the diamond variety.  Natalie Portman, Drew Barrymore and Janelle Monae were also caught red-handed with bling fingers.

Thinking of giving your wedding ring a little companionship? How about this Karina Cluster Ring from Gregg Ruth? Featuring 1.27cts of diamonds in 18K white gold, this sparkler will attract all the paparazzi!  Feeling like a star?  Go ahead, add another. This White Gold and Stainless Steel Fashion Ring from Alor fills the bill easily!

Lady’s Alor White Gold and Stainless Steel Fashion Ring

The Ears Have It

Some trends are holding firm.  Sienna Miller wore simple pearls, Emma Stone a diamond pendant necklace, and of course, statement earrings are still going strong.  Whether cuffs or chandelier, cascades or studs, large diamond earrings were very much in evidence throughout the night. Natalie Portman, Sophia Vergara, Anna Kendrick, and Lily Collins were just a few to claim this award.  Here at George Press, we have given the diamond earring award to these South Sea Pearl and Diamond Earrings, featuring South Sea pearls and 3.46cts of diamonds set in platinum for a truly opulent experience.

Also tied for first place are these gorgeous 18K Yellow Gold Diamond Satin Earrings from Doves. Contemporary styling gives these dazzlers a fresh twist that is sure to draw attention from fans and rivals alike!

Yellow Gold Diamond Satin Earrings

The Night’s Hottest Trend

Finally, we wouldn’t be your trusted jewelry fashion advisor if we didn’t point out the night’s most newsworthy trend.  That’s right, the choker stole the show.  Love them?  Hate them? More on that later.  For now, the list of choker wearers looks something like this- Emma Stone, Michelle Williams, Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and more.  Emma Stone wore a vintage 1909 Tiffany & Co. diamond choker with feminine Victorian styling.  We think this one from our Estate Collection is equally beautiful. 9.5cts of diamonds are stunning in a vintage platinum setting, proving that true classics are always in style.

Now that you have the inside skinny, you better get started on your acceptance speech. We think you might be up for a lifetime achievement award for always being the most stylish person in the room. Try to keep it under two minutes or we will play the award theme music. If that doesn’t work, we might have to ask George Clooney to escort you offstage. Wait…that might not be so terrible after all….

The Bonds of Blues – December’s Band of Birthstones

December has a number of birthstones, but the bond that binds them together is that they each offer a shade of blue, representing winter’s iciness.  The warmest of the birthstone choices is turquoise, which  commonly comes in many shades of blue and green. Turquoise can be worn any time of year and is very flattering to most skin tones.

Turquoise is also one of the oldest birthstones, having been used for more than 5,000 years on artifacts found in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia.  Tutankhamen’s tomb held many pieces of turquoise jewelry and Cleopatra used ground turquoise as eye shadow. Native Americans also prized the beautiful blue stone, using it in rituals, jewelry, and even trading it as money. Turquoise has been found in some unusually large pieces, even weighing more than 100 pounds. Turquoise’s “cousin” Lapis Lazuli, which comes in a darker blue, has also been known as a December birthstone at times.

Zircon is an ancient gem and comes in a wide range of colors, but the most popular of these is blue.  In its blue state, it is an alternative birthstone for December. Zircon Is a natural gem and not to be confused with cubic zirconia.

Added to the December birthstone list in 2002 is Tanzanite, which was first discovered in Tanzania in 1967. Tanzanite varies in tone, ranging from light blue violet to intense ultramarine.  It is prized for its beautiful colors, with the strongly colored blue purple and blue violet stones being the most desirable.

Another modern addition, and a most popular one, is blue topaz. Topaz became known as a precious gem in the classical era, (1750-1820), however it was used long before then.  Topaz was known to be the stone of the Roman god, Jupiter.  A 1680 carat topaz also takes pride of place in the Portuguese crown.

George Press has some lovely examples of December birthstone jewelry. These White Topaz and Turquoise Earrings from Doves are ethereally beautiful.  Natural Arizona turquoise, white mother of pearl and white topaz are accented by 1.18cts of diamonds.  Not your typical turquoise jewelry by any means!

Also bringing new splendor to the genre are these Turquoise and Diamond Earrings.  Here, Doves uses an 18K white gold setting and 0.50cts of diamonds to showcase the brilliant blue of traditionally colored turquoise.

As if these weren’t enough, let us present you with one more birthstone show-stopper. Again from Doves, but this time it’s a White Gold and London Blue Topaz and Diamond Ring. The spectacular cut of the center blue topaz will have you envisioning cloudless summer skies or the aurora borealis of a shimmering polar night.  So blue you want to drink it, swim in it, or put it in a crystal decanter and just admire it.

The Joy of Stocking Stuffers – Life’s Little Pleasures

In the times of old, stocking stuffers usually consisted of nuts, sweetmeats, and if you were really fortunate, an orange!  Things have changed, but what hasn’t changed is the fun of clever little surprises given as holiday gifts.

Pretty nail polishes, cute socks, makeup treats, and candy are all fitting gifts for the holiday “stocking,” but the toe is really where it’s at.  If there’s a little hard box in the toe, then you know that stocking is going to be great!!

Looking for some ideas to make your ladies sparkle and shine this December? Look no further.  The elves at George Press have some great suggestions for you!

Embracing the Bezel, Embracing the Stone

Think of a bezel as a metal collar that snugly holds a stone or other object in place.  Sometimes the bezel rises slightly above the edges of the stone. Sometimes it is flush with the stone, and sometimes it is folded down over the edges of a stone.  Watches commonly have bezels that hold their crystals in place.  Bezels are smooth, secure settings that serve a variety of purposes.

Bezels are one of the most protective settings available.  Also called a “rub-over” setting when applied to diamonds, a bezel setting helps keep the diamond in place and avoids snagging the prongs of a regular setting on clothing or hard edges.

This also makes a bezel setting suitable for holding more delicate stones, like opals or mother of pearl.  In fact, if you have a stone that is slightly chipped, you may be able to reset it in a bezel and no one will ever know!

Honora puts the bezel setting to beautiful use in this White and Black Pearl and White Topaz Ring. A white, baroque coin freshwater pearl snuggles in amiable companionship with black mother of pearl and a sparkling white topaz in three sterling silver bezel settings. Yes, black mother of pearl, with a faceted cut.  A luscious, creamy baroque pearl and a stunning white topaz.  The eye doesn’t know where to go first, and the pure simplicity of the silver setting is all that is needed for this enchanting trio.

Sleek and modern, a bezel setting is also a very contemporary look. This Flex Forte Bezel Diamond Dust Bangle is exactly what we’re talking about. In 18 karat white gold with round diamonds it is always the right bracelet to wear. Or better still, stack it with the Flex Forte Thin Bezel Bangle for a dynamic duo!

Marco Bicego certainly knows how to fine tune a bezel to his own advantage. His Aquamarine Lunaria Ring practically revels in its 18 karat yellow gold bezel setting.  The etched finish of the setting highlights the color of the aquamarine stone like the sun breaking through the mist on an early morning beach. There couldn’t be a better way to set this stone.

One final note – don’t think that all bezels have to be simple circles, they can be any shape and quite elaborate also! These George Press Coin Cufflinks are a perfect example of the bezel as an art form. Here, George Press wraps two Roman Empire bronze coins circa 100-400 A.D. in a romantic treasure chest of opulent 18 karat green gold bezel. Shiver me timbers!

Practical and beautiful, the bezel is a jeweler’s tool to be used for a purpose, in a decorative way, or both!  Take a look through our designer’s gallery and see how many bezels you can spot, then tell us your favorite on Facebook!

Topaz and Citrine-the Bounty of November’s Birthstones

When you think of November what comes to mind?  The color of the leaves?  The bounty of the harvest? Giving thanks, and the last warm rays of the sun before winter truly sets in?

All these things are reflected in November’s birthstones, the traditional golden topaz and its less expensive, but no less beautiful, alternative, citrine. Citrine has been called a gift from the sun and Topaz was believed to be a tribute to the Egyptian Sun God, Ra, and the Greek Sun God, Jupiter.  You can imagine ancient man clinging to this warm hope as long desolate winters approached.

But the past is past, and modern man has come far enough to appreciate topaz in all its incarnations. Like sapphires, topaz is available in a rainbow of vibrant hues, and citrines range in color from lemon yellow to reddish brown, and even beyond.

London Calling

There won’t be any huddling around a cave fire when you’re wearing this Doves’ White Gold Lapis Diamond Ring. The gorgeous London Blue center topaz doesn’t feel the cold at all.  Set in 18 karat white gold and outlined in diamonds, this ring is positively aristocratic. Think Lara in her billowing white furs sledding to the winter palace with Dr. Zhivago – you’ll be perfectly warm.

White Gold Lapis Diamond Ring

Winter White

Or chill out with Phillip Stein’s Horizon White Topaz Bracelet in sterling silver. According to Phillip Stein, this collection utilizes natural frequency technology to help you focus and relax.  It also looks fantastic.  Picture it on your wrist, smooth, sleek and oh so calm. We’re relaxing just thinking about it….

The Finer Things in Life

These earrings make us think of Regency-style jewelry, though rendered in modern technique and materials. Natural Arizona turquoise is blended with white mother of pearl and white topaz to create an opalescent, shimmering drop earring accented by 1.18cts of gracefully swathed diamonds. A flood of images is called to mind; Caribbean waters, beaded gowns, Greek vases, and the treasures of a mermaid’s trove.  We want them all, don’t you?

Hearth and Home

Exotic colored topazes are wonderful to be sure, but George Press doesn’t hesitate to remind us of the allure of traditional golden topaz.  His Topaz and Diamond Ring warms our feet by the fire. Classic scrolls embrace a honey-colored topaz, offset with fine black and white round, brilliant diamonds in 18 karat gold.  The effect is luxe and stately, like a classical soprano trilling arias beside a grand piano or 50-year-old scotch in a Baccarat crystal glass.  If you can only have one topaz, then this is the one to have.

Fortunately, you can have as many of these as you wish. If topaz is your birthstone, it’s practically your obligation to explore! Set off for London, the North Pole and the Caribbean, then come home and rest your weary limbs by the fire as you remember your adventures. It certainly beats bringing in the sheaves!

Fantasies in Black and White – Classic Jewelry and Halloween Costumes!

Is there anything more classic than black and white?  Yin and Yang, day and night, naughty and nice?  It’s amazing how these black and white jewelry selections can help bring your Halloween costume fantasies to life!

   Snow White

Maybe today you feel as innocent as the day you were born.  Butter wouldn’t melt in your mouth.  Everything is rainbows and unicorns. Let your inner light shine on the hoi polloi.  We can make it happen.

This Lady’s Contemporary White Gold Fashion Ring from Alor is just what you need. Refreshing and bright, it radiates your inner glow out into the world. In 18 karat white gold with round diamonds, it is Glinda the good witch coming down in her bubble to save the day. Life around you will just be better, you’re an angel!

The Dark Side

Now for something black and mysterious. Perfect for those who favor spooky Halloween costumes; witches, vampiresses, brides of Frankenstein and sultry seductresses of every sort. Feast your eyes on Alor’s Lady’s Black Ribbon Bangle Bracelet. Reminiscent of wrought iron in New Orleans’s French Quarter or hand-drawn embellishments in old manuscripts, this bracelet tantalizes with its old world flavor.

On the other hand, since gothic inspiration is so very today, it could also be described as strikingly modern and youthful. Pair this black ribbon cable in stainless steel and white gold with a chic black sheath and your sophistication factor will rise by a mile.

The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful

Of course, to take black and white to its fullest potential, nothing is more successful than pairing the two.  This Black Sterling Silver Stingray Cuff with Pearls from Honora can do just the trick. You wouldn’t describe this bracelet as delicate or subtle.  No, it’s bold, confident and powerful!  Manifest that image just by slipping it on.  Wonder Woman’s cuffs were also known as the Bracelets of Submission.  What will you call yours?

Black Sterling Silver Stingray Cuff

Portrait of a Lady

Beaded flapper dresses from the Roaring 20’s and the daughters of Downton Abbey, a splash of art deco flair from this Honora Square Onyx and Pearl Bracelet sets just the right tone. Accepting a tipped hat from a doorman with an ever so gracious nod, it’s lunch in the city and an intimate supper with elegant friends.  We love the look and the way the soft warmth of the pearls plays off the crisp sparkle of square onyx and sterling silver. Gold highlights make this wearable with so many other pieces.  Truly the best of both worlds.

Honora Square Onyx and Pearl Bracelet

  …And for My Final Trick

Like a magician performing his grand finale, we just have to pull these earrings from our proverbial hat.  For your grand amusement, may we present these Alor Noire Collection Diamond Earrings in 18 Karat white gold, stainless steel and diamonds.  Whether you are the beautiful assistant, or the sexy magician herself, these electric earrings will sway and sparkle under the spotlights, distracting the audience from your sleight of hand. When you disappear in a puff of smoke you will leave them all wanting more, more, more.

Alor Noire Collection Diamond Earrings

It’s fun to dress up for Halloween and fun to be someone else for a change.  We love matching jewelry to costume suggestions, but jewelry also has to function in the real world and all of these pieces do that wonderfully.  Choose your favorite look and weave it into your Halloween plans, and then wear it again and again in   everyday life.  Fantasy and reality, coexisting in a bit of luxury. Happy Halloween!!

Pantone Unveils 10 Colors to Watch for Spring 2017 – And So Do We!

September is the time for fashion weeks worldwide.  London debuted on Sept. 16–20, New York on Sept. 21-27 and Paris right behind them on Sept. 27-Oct. 5. Most people watch these shows and oooh and aaaah over the amazing clothes, but the experts at the Pantone Color Institute have a job to do. Once again, they have chosen New York Fashion Week to announce the top 10 colors that will grace homes and closets in Spring 2017.

Making the selections are a group of color experts from around the world. These experts track global color trends and evaluate their usage in upcoming fashion collections. The colors are assigned a name and a color code, so designers can order a variety of goods, like shoe, purses, towels and dishes, all in the same colors.

The colors selected for 2016 were Buttercup Yellow, Fiesta Red, Green Flash, Iced Coffee, Lilac Grey (loved it!), Limpet Shell Blue, Peach Echo, Rose Quartz, Serenity Blue and Snorkel Blue.  You must have seen these colors when you were out and about shopping this year.

And now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for…the colors of Spring 2017!

This time there are three blues, Lapis Blue, Niagra and Island Paradise.  As you would assume, Lapis Blue is the deep vibrant color of the semi-precious stone, lapis lazuli.  A color also frequently found in sapphires, Lapis Blue is wonderfully represented in this Gregg Ruth Espris Collection Diamond and Sapphire Ring. This 18 karat white gold ring is on point with 0.88cts of round diamonds and bright blue sapphires to die for.

Look to this picture of beloved designer Marco Bicego’s Topaz Delicati Necklace for an example of Niagra blue. It’s been described as looking like a worn pair of jeans, but we think the darker mid-tone blue with grey influence mimics the cold running waters of a northern river. Hmm, Niagara/Niagra, one wonders….

The third blue in this lineup is lovely Island Paradise. The color of glacier ice or tropical light turquoise waters, we are torn between “Frozen” and beaches for a description.  Let these Patras Aquamarine Earrings from Ivanka Trump do it for us. Stunning aquamarines almost the color in question are surrounded by 0.75cts of diamonds in 18 karat white gold settings.  Thanks for settling that one, Ivanka!

Next up we have sunny Primrose Yellow. More lemony than last year’s Buttercup, this color, like the Primrose itself, is a harbinger of Spring. Again, we turn to designer Gregg Ruth for a shining example in this Yellow Diamond Pendant consisting of 18 karat white and yellow gold, accompanied by 0.53cts of white and yellow diamonds.

Greenery is always a nice highlight in any bouquet.  The same is true of this natural color selection. Greenery is more organic and mossy than last year’s Green Flash. It works amazingly well with most of the other color selections.  As an example, look at the green of this vibrant tourmaline available in Marco Bicego’s 18 karat hand-engraved yellow gold Jaipur Ring.

Oddly enough, another one of Bicego’s stackable Jaipur rings features a splashy pink tourmaline that mirrors Pink Yarrow, another 2017 color. Stack them together for double fashion impact!

If you prefer a gentler pink, you are sure to be a fan of Pink Dogwood – and we have the perfect bracelet for you! As refined and elegant as you are, these Cream and Pink South Sea Tahitian Pearls find a worthy setting in the diamond and 18 karat rose gold of this bypass bangle. Button up your twin set or pick your favorite little black dress, slip on this Diamond and Pearl Bypass Bangle and you are good to go – anywhere!

Things heat up with Flame, the next color on the list, which, as you might expect, is a bright fiery orange. Also inspired by nature, the second green, Kale, is a color most closely exemplified by the band and dial of this Victorinox Swiss Army Men’s Inox watch. With luminous accents, date window and logo, this watch is water resistant to 200 meters and comes with a three-year limited warranty.

Last but not least, Pantone gives us Hazelnut.  A splendid neutral with warm flesh tones, Hazelnut and rose gold are a natural pairing. This Bertolucci Women’s Diamond Serena Garbo watch is the perfect example. Stainless steel and rose gold work beautifully together with 180 diamonds and a curved crystal with antireflective treatment. If Hazelnut were a metal, it would be this shade of rose gold.

So there you have it, the Pantone 2017 lineup of fashionable colors.  We know that we’ve already picked our favorites, how about you?  Keep an eye out and be a color detective this year. See how many of these shades you can spot in your favorite stores. Strut your fashionista knowledge like a model on the catwalk. Meanwhile, if you find something you love in one of these new hues, remember, we’ve got the perfect accessories!

How Many Shades of Grey Do You Desire? – Grey Jewelry Rises to the Occasion!

Everyone’s talking about shades of grey, and no, we don’t mean a certain book or movie…. We’re talking about the many shades that grey jewelry comes in, and its newfound importance in the fashion world.

Perhaps the best illustration is to look at the names of some grey shades. Pewter, Platinum, Old Silver, Pale Silver, Roman Silver, Silver, Silver Chalice, Steel… see where we’re going here? Grey is cool, grey is elegant, grey is sexy, and grey jewelry is skyrocketing.

Grey stones have been flying off the shelves and it’s easy to see why. Grey is so neutral, and more than that, adaptable.  It goes anywhere, at any time of day, and always looks sophisticated. The particular shade you choose is simply a matter of preference.  We love them all! We especially like this Honora Topaz Ring set in a sterling silver halo with a center topaz surrounded by pyrite crystals.

Honora Topaz Ring

The pearl market is also experiencing increased demand for grey-toned pearls. Put away your pearly whites and aim for one of these luscious charmers. Honora combines tradition
with a modern edge in this Grey White Ombre Pearl Necklace. These Fresh Water Cultured Pearls say all that needs to be said when highlighting the neckline of a chic suit, or tossed over a white blouse and jeans. Is there anything they wouldn’t improve dramatically? Also – Ombre – enough said!

Honora Grey White Ombre Pearl Necklace

Honora Grey White Ombre Tripe Strand

While we’re on the topic of gorgeous grey pearls, let’s not forget these beautiful Baroque Pearl Earrings set in 14 karat white gold with diamonds. Each splendid drop is nature’s work of art. Picture them on your ears, you won’t be able to look away, and neither will anyone else. They say pearls grow more lustrous the more you wear them, what they don’t tell you is that you grow more lustrous too!

Baroque Pearl Earrings

Fashionable grey can also be presented in metal form. Although some might argue that diamonds are grey-ish, we think it is the bangle itself that steals the show in this Alor Classic Three Row Diamond Bangle. Certainly, diamonds are always a welcome enhancement, but just look at the streamlined appeal of these three stainless steel bands. Strong, yet feminine, it doesn’t mince words, but it sure knows how to flatter!

So put away the Christian Grey and strap on something even sexier. Grey jewelry goes a long way towards making you look and feel like the polished cosmopolitan that you are. These shades of grey are anything but dull, and you won’t be able to resist their smoky sensuous allure. Let them pull you in and have their way with you…. It’s easy to get carried away when you’re talking about grey!

Diamonds are a Girl’s Best April Birthstone!

Congratulations, April babies you have won the birthstone lottery! As much as girls born in other months may cherish their own special birthstones, rest assured that they all secretly envy you.  Some more than others!

The name diamond comes from the Greek word “adamas,”meaning invincible. Diamonds come in a wide range of colors, including yellow, orange, black, blue, purple, green, pink and red.  These diamonds are known as “fancy,” and the color is created by impurities in the stone, such as yellow for nitrogen and blue for boron.

Luckily for the rest of us, there is nothing to stop anyone from enjoying the beauty and magnificence of diamond jewelry. Today’s diamond jewelry comes in a variety of styles from playful to elegant, and can be enjoyed all day-and all night- long. So don’t be an April fool, put those diamonds on and shine, shine, shine!

Now here’s a ring that’s perfect for those who have arrived!  Set in 18 karat gold, this ring is a sophisticated mix for the bold at heart.  A 2.00ct center stone lords it over a court of smaller diamonds. Exquisite taste at an exceptional price, custom made for the discerning buyer by George Press.

So Happy Birthday to April’s offspring, enjoy your well-deserved birthstone!  As for the rest of us, remember – “everyday” does not mean “ordinary.” You can wear ANY of these knockouts every day, but you will certainly be a long, long way from ordinary!

Making A Splash!

Do you fancy yourself a secret mermaid? Do you have an affinity for the sea and things beachy, or languid sun-warmed pools? Is your birthday in March? Then it’s no surprise that your birthstone is the dreamiest blue-green shade of beryl known as aquamarine. Literally, “water of the sea”, in olden times aquamarine was said to calm waves and keep sailors safe. It was also thought to keep marriages happy. Of course, that could be said of most gems!

Aquamarine comes straight from the earth in beautiful six-sided prismatic crystals. The largest gem-quality aquamarine crystal ever mined was 19 inches long. How amazing that it survived intact like that! Queen Elizabeth’s “Brazilian Tiara” has a remarkable center aquamarine which was given to her as a coronation gift from the people of Brazil. The Brazilian government also gave an 1,847 carat aquamarine to Eleanor Roosevelt in 1935. It’s great to have friends!

Aquamarine sparkles so brilliantly and has such wonderful color that it is one of the most popular gems, with jewelers and customers alike. A lot of modern designers are incorporating aquamarine into their lines. Ivanka Trump knows how to get aquamarine to do her bidding. From her Patras Collection, this Horizontal Ring is a pool of beauty in 18 karat white gold with micro pave diamonds.

Ivanka Trump Patras Aquamarine Earrings

Likewise, these Patras Aquamarine Drop Earrings in 18 karat white gold with diamonds are so in vogue right now, they could be right from the red carpet. That center blue is a little bit of heaven tethered to the earth by diamond cords.

Marco Bicego Aquamarine and Gold Lunaria Necklace

Marco Bicego also takes the plunge with his aquamarine and 18 karat yellow gold Lunaria line. This brings out the sunny-side of aquamarine and is perfect for day-to-evening wear.

So versatile, so scrumptious. Lots of women choose to wear aquamarine regardless of their birth month. But March ladies, you wear it with entitlement! That’s your birthright! Let others be jealous of your secret mermaid status. We won’t tell anyone.

New Year!

New Year’s has come and gone, and now it’s time dear friends to once again consult the fashion fortune teller and find out what the top trends will be for 2016. Come with me now…………

Mirror, mirror on the wall…oops sorry, wrong fortune.  Looking into my crystal ball…I see that there are a number of trends in the jewelry world this year.  Stackable rings and bracelets are still going strong, along with Y necklaces, and openwork or open-ended bracelets and rings.

But…what’s this? I see some new trends emerging! Here’s something hot and new in bridal jewelry- mixed metals!  Rose gold and platinum or yellow gold and white gold.  Look at the beauty of this Couture Parisian Engagement Ring from Verragio.  The yellow highlights make the 18 karat white gold pop! Settings are finally rivaling diamonds for center stage.  It’s a revelation!

Let me look again. Oh darn can you pass me the Windex please my crystal ball is getting cloudy.  Wait, wait, I see something…it’s dark, it’s shiny…its blackened metals!

Wow, what a unique trend. A lot of top designers indicate that they will be featuring blackened metals in their new lines. Of course, at George Press we are already ahead of the curve. Come in and look at some of our fashion forward offerings like these Alor Noir Collection Diamond Earrings featuring the crisp contrast of black stainless steel against 18 karat white gold and stainless steel. Diamond swirls in the center are heavenly against the geometric background.

Is that the phone ringing? No, no hold on, I’m getting a message from the other side. There’s one more trend that you should know about. Uniquely shaped diamonds and colored stones are gathering attention as celebrities flaunt them on the red carpet. Hearts and pears have been shown particular favor and it’s easy to see why. George Press celebrates the pear-shaped diamond in this custom 18 karat white gold engagement ring.  Smaller diamonds surround the center stone in a loving embrace for a dazzling effect. Want to be even more original?  Try setting it slightly sideways.  Remember, at George Press we can make whatever your heart desires.

Ah the crystal ball is darkening now. Thank you spirits for your wise counsel. Perhaps Madame would like to have her palm read?  No?  That’s probably just as well, I must say I am drained.  Another time perhaps. Until then, go forth and be fashionable!

October’s Birthstones

What’s your go-to fall look?  Camel? Gray? Another loyal neutral?  These are lovely, but it’s not winter yet!  Fall is a time of spirited color, and meek and mild gems just won’t do.

When vibrant hues light up the treetops and iridescent haze coats the hills and fields, it’s time to call forth two of nature’s more audacious gems, opal and tourmaline!

Tourmaline comes in shades of pink, red, orange, magenta, blue, green and violet.   Many varieties of tourmaline have their own names – like Rubellite for pink, red and orange, Indicolite for blue-green and blue, Chrome for intense green, Savannah for yellow; and Watermelon, a parti-colored stone which is pink and green and sometimes also white.

Marco Bicego plays with the tourmaline color spectrum in this pair of Jaipur Color Tourmaline Rings in 18 karat gold with your choice of vibrant green or pink tourmaline.

Opal, historically known as the “Queen of Gems”, contains the colors of many gems and was once thought to have all of their properties.  Precious opals have a show of sparkling colors called “play of color” displayed against solid backgrounds called “body colors”.

You can really see the play of color in this Opal Diamond and Sapphire Heart Pendant, currently part of the George Press Estate Collection. With 1.48cts of diamonds, imagine how it will flash against a tasteful fall sweater. A little morse code for kindred adventurous spirits…look at me, dash dot dot dash…..

Some of the most recognized varieties of opal include white or light opal, black opal, Fire or Mexican opal, Boulder opal, and Crystal or Water opal. Boulder opal contains some of the stone matrix on which it is formed and Crystal opal has a translucent background. Unlike other opals, Fire opal frequently does not display play of color. It comes in strong shades of yellow, brown, orange, or red and can easily hold it’s own among the flashier crowd. Look at the glow in this Mexican Fire Opal and Orange Sapphire Ring from Shoshana, this ember can stand up to any fall maple leaf!

Everything’s Coming Up Rose Gold

There’s no question that there has been a trend in gold this year. Rose Gold in particular has risen and remained at the top of women’s fashion must-have lists.

It’s really no wonder that this gold is so popular. The softness of rose gold can add a feminine, yet glamorous, touch to your look in any season.

Rose gold first rose to popularity in the 19th century in Russia. During the 1920s, Cartier debuted the now iconic Trinity ring of rose, white, and yellow gold, bringing rose gold back to the forefront of fashion. Although Rose Gold is currently trending, it’s not to be confused with a simple fad. Rose Gold is classically beautiful and easy to wear with many outfits. It is so sought-after today, that even Apple is introducing a Rose Gold tone iPhone this year–finally!

Ready to embrace the beauty of Rose Gold? This simple yet elegant 18 karat rose gold Marrakech bracelet by Marco Bicego unites femininity and minimalism masterfully. Less is definitely more with this beauty.
